Napa Pride day 7: big Pride dance for 21+, youth movie night, Fri, June 18, 2010

Friday, June 18, 2010's Pride night festivities include the "You Can Leave Your Hat On" Pride Dance as well as a youth movie night:
  • 6p (VIP), 7p (dance) -midnight: "You Can Leave Your Hat On!" Pride celebration, dance, food at Made In Napa Culinary Centre
As we mentioned weeks ago, Friday's big Pride dance is for the 21+. If last year's dances and this week's events are any indication of the energy, crowd, fun, love and craziness, this dance is going to be incredible. Basically, for $35 at the door, you get unlimited drinks and dancing from 7p - 11p. For slightly higher ticket prices, you can get VIP which includes an amazing meal at 6p and coffee and desserts after the last song plays at 11p. The proceeds of the evening go towards Relay for Life.

  • 7p-9:30p: "Rocky Horror Picture Show" youth movie night at location to be announced
The location has changed recently so please follow the link to get the latest information. While the "adults" are enjoying their dance, we'll be doing the Time Warp! Join us for a very special screening of the film--and guess what!? It's Free!
There's only a few days left for the festivities, better soak it all in! For a list of the rest of the week's events for Napa Valley LGBTQ Pride 2010. click here.

Napa Pride day 6: fundraising toys, Chef's Market Pride & Downtown Joe's w/ Guerilla Gays, Thurs, June 17, 2010

They're stacking up the fun again! Here's today's Pride triplet of activities:
  • Napa Valley Toy Company 10 & 10 Day, St. Helena
Let's continue raising much needed money for our local PFLAG and this time with some awesome discounts at the Napa Valley Toy Company. They will give Pride shoppers a 10% discount and additionally donate 10% of the day's gross sales to PFLAG! Make sure to wish the owner/clerk a "Happy Pride".

  • 5p-9p: Chef's Market Pride Night, downtown Napa
Chef's Market is downtown Napa's weekly summer street-fair, with music, food, wine and lots of people watching. Tonight we'll gay it up a bit with local LGBT groups (and yours truly, The Fruit's blog author) staffing a rainbow festooned table to get the word out about what they offer and to answer questions, and Guerilla Gay Mission Commander Rick Turko will be "Guest Chef"ing at the demo table, with support from T.J. of Stonehedge (featured) wines and Annie the Baker. (Wear your Pride dogtags and rainbow bracelets or colors so we can find you all walking the market!)

  • 7:30p-9:30p: Downtown Joe's invaded by Napa Guerilla Gay Bar
After the Chef's Market, join Napa's Guerilla Gays and friends at Downtown Joe's for some pub time and celebrate Pride. Will the rainbow flag be waving above the park again?

Black Cat Napa closed

So, this isn't exactly breaking news, being that sources say the Black Cat has been closed for between four to six months and a "for lease" sign has been up on the building for a while as well--but I thought that since the term, "Black Cat" "Napa", is still one of our top searched for items here on the Valley's Other Fruit that I would update our visitors to let them know...

While I never got a chance to visit, the Black Cat Club (Private Party) had its loyal fans and visitors and quite the reputation (when I first started this blog, rumors of this weekend gay party had me very curious. An underground gay club in Napa??). The Black Cat was billed as a "philanthropic minded social club for gay men" where for a cover charge and/or the price of drinks you could socialize--in Napa!--with other gay men over a drinks in a very gay friendly environment. I'm sure you readers could fill in the descriptive details about what you loved, disliked or enjoyed about the Black Cat. In spite of salacious rumors (porn! drugs! gogo boys! hooking up!), the Black Cat was a gay bar and gathering spot for gay men when Napa didn't have any gay bars...

Due to personal reasons, the owner of the daytime florist/design shop that housed the Black Cat on Friday and Saturday nights has decided to close its doors.

Please leave your thoughts, memories, experiences and well-wishes to the proprietor of the Black Cat in the comments.

Will Napa ever get a legit, out-in-the-open gay spot?
In the meantime, thanks to Napa's Guerilla Gay Bar for providing something.

Napa Guerrilla Gay Bar goes to Characters (in the Marriott), Fri, Sept 18

Just a couple days ago, I got a short, to the point email from our friends at the Napa Guerrilla Gay Bar, our local, "make a place gay for the day" traveling gathering:
After a brief late-summer hiatus the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar returns!

Join us when we invade Characters Sports Bar & Grill at the beautiful

Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa
3425 Solano Avenue in Napa
(just north of Trancas/Redwood, just west of Highway 29)

Friday, September 18, 2009
any time after 6:00 pm until closing

This event is open to all ages!
...and that was it. Short, to the point, and unexpected. (I had thought that the AIDS Walk dinner/fundraisers were going to be the only events for this month, but I guess I though wrong.) Anyone been to Characters before? Who's going this Friday?

"Sin" LGBT club night debut in Rohnert Park, Sep 10

From the net, I just got word of a new LGBT club night opening in Rohnert Park--"Sin" at JK's Ultra Lounge. This looks to be not just an "ultra lounge" but ultra-new. Turns out JK's by day is "JK's Four Season Chinese Buffet". Has JK's done anything similar for the straight crowd?
Sin @ JK's Ultra Lounge
(JK's Four Season Chinese Buffet)
595 Rohnert Park Expressway W
Rohnert Park, CA

Debut Night: Thursday, September 10
Running every Thursday
9p-1:30am
Hip-hop, latin and house
$3 drink specials
$5 cover after 10p
Anyone think they'll go check it out? Looks like Santa Rosa's Glam might have some competition coming. And, is it a Sonoma County thing to convert Days Inn's and Chinese Buffet's into club nights? I'm okay with multiple identities if the night life is hot.

Click here for Sin's myspace page.

Napa Guerrilla Gay Bar goes to Jonesy's @ the Airport, Sat, July 11

Since Napa has no gay bars, the "Guerrilla Gay Bar" finds a nice (or fun or interesting or at the very least kitschy) spot for us LGBT folk to go check out every couple of weeks or so.

We've had fabulous times at: Henry's (a locals' fave Napa dive), Compadres (great river patio celebration of our blogoversary), Pancha's (iconic down-home Yountville dive), Silo's (new-ish Jazz destination in downtown Napa), Mary's Pizza (community benefit fundraiser), Bardessono (upscale Pride kickoff and cocktails poolside)...

...and now Napa Guerrilla Gay Bar is showing up in force at Jonesy's Famous Steakhouse...at the Napa Airport:
Jonesy's Famous Steak House
2044 Airport Road
at the Napa County Airport just south of Napa

Saturday, July 11, 2009
starting at 7:00 pm

The cocktail lounge at Jonesy's will be the perfect location for aerial maneuvers - you can almost imagine Goose and Maverick singing "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" to the recently out Kelly McGillis when you walk in.

Here's the intel:

* Jonesy's has a full bar - and will have drink specials just for us
* They offer appetizers in their bar - and are working on a food special or two as well
* Their "special potatoes" are legendary and they have their own brand of Bleu Cheese Dressing
* "Prime Rib Friday & Saturday Nights" may provide the reason for many of our carnivorous troops to move into the restaurant after a cocktail or two
Anyone ever been to Jonesy's? Who's down to check it out w/ the Guerrilla Gay Bar?

Reminder: Napa Guerrilla Gay Bar tonight in Yountville, May 1

May day! May day!

In case you missed our first announcement, tonight's edition of Napa Guerrilla Gay Bar will be held at Pancha's in Yountville. Click through for more details.

Remember to wear red so we know you're one of us.

So, Who's going?

[Side note: Ooopsy! Apparently somebody read the original post on Guerrilla Gay Bar's blog and was offended at a not-so-kind comment included about the bartender at Pancha's. I checked in with the Guerrilla Gay Bar's organizer and confirmed that indeed, it was a typo. The snippet in question was mixed in with a section of reviews copied and pasted for the original post on their site, intended to give a down-home flavor of what we can expect for tonight. Truthfully, the reason Pancha's was chosen for tonight was because we've heard positive things and it seems it's a must to experience this Napa Valley institution. He promises next time to copy, paste and link extra carefully so as to avoid any similar confusions.]

Black Cat Napa changes its tone, "Philanthropic social club for gay men"?

I still have never been to the Black Cat (in Napa), so what I know is only from juicy rumors, hearsay and reliable story telling... (I previously covered the Black Cat in July and September of 2008)

In spite of conflicting reports about the Black Cat being closed since the police showed up in early April, a fan of theirs (maybe a promoter?), via our tipline tells me they, indeed, are still open. Some recent guests say--as in times past--each weekend is different: some nights it's hoppin', others nights not so much. And the age of the crowd varies as well.

Either way, it looks like sometime in April the Black Cat changed their promotional tone on their official website to be a little bit more vague and a little bit more community friendly.

We now get:
A PHILANTHROPIC MINDED SOCIAL CLUB FOR GAY MEN

Men Only / Donations Accepted

These Meetings and Private Parties Are Not Open To The Public And Are For Members Only

All Proceeds Go To Local Charities
(Instead of the previous: "You're invited to join us & explore your exhibitionist & voyeurism fantasies! ... We offer a clothes check, hot guys, porn, and VIP Lounge")

Anyone been to the Black Cat in Napa lately? Any changes to the actual party on Fridays and Saturdays?

Latin drag show & Napa Pride fundraiser this Sat, April 25

Napa Billiards is having another of their famous latin drag shows this Saturday, April 25. The flyer says after 9p, but the ladies aren't ready until closer to 10:30p if you ask me. Cover is $5 and proceeds fund permits for Napa Valley Pride's parade and picnic this June.

Blogoversary celebration and Guerilla Gay Bar a fabulous success!

With over 50 people showing up for Monday night's Valley's Other Fruit's blogoversary celebration and Napa's Guerrilla Gay Bar, tonight was a huge success!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and to Compadres for handling an unexpectedly big and unexpectedly queer crowd. Sure, there was a long wait for bar service, but we were a great mix of fun: both young and young-at-heart, and the back patio was perfect (and thankfully there were no incidents with big hair and those huge, Indiana-Jones-worthy tiki torches). Who knew Napa would have something going on--and on a Monday night, no less?

Bummer that I got stuck with a $28 tab for the one margarita I purchased--apparently some in our group dined-and-ditched (you know who you are--quesadilla platter and two margaritas!). But I wouldn't let that ruin the evening.

The banner (Larry), the cake (Kim & Traci), the rainbow peeps and the help with getting the word out (Rick, et. al)... thanks to all who made it a fabulous evening and for sharing in what truly was a community celebration and a celebration of our community.

Here's to many years ahead for The Valley's Other Fruit.

...we'll publish a slide-show of photos, so send yours in, too (and I still want to know who was grabbing my ass in the group shot)!

The Valley's Other Fruit's Blogoversary: Celebrate one year with us!

So here's the deal. On Monday, April 6th, it'll be one year since The Valley's Other Fruit's very first post. I'll spare you (for now) most of the details of how far we've come in one year's time and get right to the details of our celebration...

On Monday, April 6, 2009, we'll gather at Compadres Rio Grill at 8:30pm and celebrate until we can't take any more margaritas (let me just say that I can hold my liquor, so we'll be there a good while). Here's the additional good part(s):
  • Napa's Guerrilla Gay Bar is helping lead the celebration (and we're right after the Unity League's monthly mixer across the street) so we'll be a good sized group to celebrate AND you're almost guaranteed to meet someone new!
  • Some friends are bringing baked goods and treats (feel free to bring some, too!) so they're be dessert!
  • It's Margarita Monday's so $5 get's you a back bar or top shelf cocktail
Spread the invitation! Here's the link to the invite on Facebook, we'll get one going on MySpace soon, too.

Compadres Rio Grill is located at 505 Lincoln Ave, Napa, CA 94558, just east of Wal Mart between Soscol and Silverado Trail.

Guerrilla Gay Bar (Napa Edition) coming this Friday

And the new LGBT/gay bar in Napa is...not really a (as in one single) place.

Since the Depot and it's Rainbow Room closed a few years back, the Valley has seen a dearth of LGBT exclusive places (Black Cat is a whole other animal). Since God only knows how soon we'll get our next, full-fledged, family friendly, queer bar, why not create our own?

Enter scene: Guerrilla Gay Bar. In it's own words:

Every week or so we'll pick a new local bar, pub or eatery and make it and our community fabulous with our presence.

The point? Have fun, spend time together and support the businesses in our community.

So, how do you find out about our next mission? (we are, after all, a "guerilla" organization!):
Alright . . . ready for our first mission?

Here it is: FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 2009

It’s a Double Header! First, it’s a Patio Party at BarBersQ from 4 pm to 7 pm. Kelly & Stephen will be serving up all kinds of goodies, including Grilled Oysters ($1.25 each), Q Beef or Lamb Burgers ($3.00 each) and their delicious ribs for a buck a piece. BarBersQ is located in Bel-Aire Plaza at Trancas & California in Napa. Once you’ve had your fill there it’s time to move on to...

Henry’s Cocktail Lounge! From 5:30 pm to “whenever” we’ll be making this “Casual Dive” at 823 Main Street in Napa fabulous!
From conversations with the Guerrilla Gay Bar (Napa Edition)'s organizer, it looks like there are plans for a weekly (or so) casual gathering at different spots and potentially bigger bashes once a month. It'll only work if we show up...AND if we talk about what's not working so hot and what's absolutely fabulous. Share in the comments.

R-Bar Vallejo closing? Not so fast...

[Update: R-Bar has since closed. Details here.]

I heard a rumor, via the Fruit's tipline, that R-Bar in Vallejo ("Vallejo's only LGBT Bar", "longest happy hour, Tuesday - Friday, 6-9p) might be closing within the week.

The economy sure isn't helping, and now with the internets (with easy, safer organizing and easy, not-necessarily-so-safe online hookups) it looks like Fortune magazine's prediction might be coming true.

I got the scoop from an anonymous source connected to R-Bar:
"Well...it's all kind of up in the air right now. They are looking at 3 more months for sure as of now. They have several interested parties that are looking in to purchasing the bar and keeping it running. They are trying their damnedest to keep it going as those who work there love it and the loyal customers. If it comes to a time when they know they are closing they will make announcements and possibly plan a closing party.... They are not looking at moving at this time, it would be a final close =(.

Say a prayer, cause R-Bar needs it!

Thanks!"
Remember, folks, support your local LGBT friendly hang-outs if you want them to stay around! As much as I love the online community building, there's something to be said for meeting real life people--in real life--and also the affect it has on the rest of the community when they see us as real and vibrant and contributing to our community just as much as the rest of the neighborhood (if not more).

R-Bar is at 437 Virginia Street, in Vallejo.

Drag Night at Napa Billiards Sat - magic of the 80s

In case you are manic for some Madonna (impersonation) or craving some costumed Cyndi Lauper, Napa Billiards is hosting another of its almost-monthly drag nights, TONIGHT, January 31st. The Theme tonight is 80s, and the typically latin pool hall will be featuring more than a few american pop wonders from that time as well as some latino 80s hit makers.

The flyer claims they start "after 9:00PM (despues de las 9:00PM)", but we all know the ladies take a little extra time to pamper, so if you get there between 9 and 10 you should be fine.

Napa Billiards
988 Lincoln Ave
Napa, CA 94558

If they're doing 80s, who would be worth seeing?
