Out on the scene: big, gay, softball weekend brings hundreds to Napa

Well the moment we--and most definitely I--had been anticipating finally came! The big gay softball tournament and players (very handsome players, and lots of them) were here! Napa's out and gay population was increased by the hundreds! I haven't gotten input from organizers yet, but it seems like this weekend's gay softball tournament, the Golden Bear Classic, went very well (maybe even a home run?). Hopefully it will be coming back next year bigger than before. I will definitely be nominating a couple people to the organizing committee, that's for sure.

Yes, there were really hundreds of sporty gay softball players running around Napa this weekend. Yes, a local business hoisted up a large, billowing rainbow flag. Yes, there where big, gay, after parties. Want to know more? Read on...

Not sure if it's a bad thing (or good), but local media (Napa Register, radio) didn't cover the event at all. (I say maybe good because who knows if protesters would have shown up and made it worse than just the rain...)

Firstly, make sure you got to see the pictures, here.

The weekend was a lot of fun and a huge opportunity for the City of Napa (that we hope we can be a part of helping Napa to fully embrace next year). It was our first year playing host city, so I'll cut Napa some slack--my friends and I, and the players we saw, had a great time--it can only get better in 2009.

I was very proud that more than a couple local businesses put up rainbow flag stickers in their windows:
  • Downtown Joe's (Who also hung a large flag from the side of their building too! It's a shame the wind and rain hid it most of the time, TYPICAL!)
  • First Squeeze (Who also catered the concessions at Kennedy Park)
  • Loco's Tex-Mex (Dunno if they had rainbow stickers, but they also kept the hungry ones fed at Kennedy's fields)
  • Uva (Stuck it right up there with their menu and b/w jazz photos!)
  • Of course, Napa Billiards, who also hosted a big Saturday Night party (read more, below) and proudly displayed a large flag above their front door on Lincoln Ave.
  • Cuvée went all out with a DJ & dance and disco lights (which to some is even more of a siren song to gay males than the rainbow flag)
  • I heard that Billco and Small World put some up, but didn't see anything. Did you see any anywhere else?
Some other restaurants were kind enough to run specials, but with all the games and the rain delays I'm not sure how many of the players got to read the blog and take advantage of them:
  • Stave Wine Lounge
  • Smoking Cat. Cafe
  • Gay Napa Getaways
Friday evening had all the players and teams gathering at Gaia in American Canyon (yes, I know it looks like a-i-a with a spiral next to it, but it's really Gaia) for reigstration in an upstais ballroom. The long hallway had 4 or 5 tables stretched down along the side with the usual registration materials and packets for each player and larger, gray bags for managers. Pretty standard, conference style action. It was entering the ballroom that was most exciting: there had to have been about 500 guys in there, from all over. We heard (they didn't have their uniforms on yet, just street clothes) they were from as far away as Washington State on one end of the coast and San Diego on the other. They were mostly around their mid- to late- twenties, but some were a little younger and some a little older. It was a mixed group (and I mean ethnicities: white, latino, black, asian, etc. ) but we also heard that each team is "allowed" a maximum of two "straighties". I'm not sure how they prove it either way (I still haven't received my gay I.D.), but the rule is hilarious and reminds me of that W&G episode where Jack is competing to get into the gay men's chorus against straight foe, Matt Damon.

So for the real dirt on the fun Saturday night: There was a big miscommunication and maybe due to printing delays (or whatever?) the program and the SFGSL website said that Saturday night's plans were TBA. But they forgot about the "announced" part, and so the only thing the players knew about was the big drag spectacular at Napa Billiards. That's definitely not a bad thing and a good amount of them showed up for the show. However, I know of a handful that stayed in the East Bay or SF and commuted, and others who struggled to find something to do or just stayed at the hotel in American Canyon. Meanwhile, the DJ and fabulous setup at Cuvée lay empty until much later on in the evening.

The 50 or 60 who showed up at Napa Billiards seemed to have a great time. It's fair to say that it's the most gay white boys that that place has seen in a long time. The girls did a great job with the show and balancing the English language music with their traditional stand-bys and Jenny Rivera. They took on pop acts like Rihanna, Brittney Spears and Gloria Estefan and then threw in a Liza Minelli singing New York, New York in a glittery gold leotard (with matching glittery gold top-hat and cane, of course!). The beers were selling like hotcakes (you get what I mean) beneath the arch of rainbow balloons, and the bartenders and staff tried to keep up with the very full house. I did see quite a few of the players not only admire, but tipping the dancers. I hope the bartenders got some lovin' as well. I know Fabian was looking forward to meeting some cute white boys.

Whatever happened with Cuvée not being advertised, we tried to do our best to get the word out and handed out tri-fold brochures with the lounge/restaurant's picture and address and let them know that there was a full bar and DJ waiting.

By the time the drag show ended it was 12:30ish, my small group headed over to Cuvée which was its usual quiet (but nicely lit and comfortable) self. The DJ left because none of the players arrived early on (and imagine that we had thought Cuvée was going to be THE place to be!), but by that time, they were looking for more to do and harder alcohol. There were a couple players at one of the tables, and slowly the lounge became lively with about 20 or so of them showing up later on. Eventually they (God bless 'em) outlasted me and my small group of friends--drinking, toasting, and shaking their booties to the Madonna and other gay favorites that the manager managed to pipe into the lounge through the ceiling speakers. Not exactly a raging dance hall, but still they seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. MANY special thanks go to the Napa Valley Unity League for sponsoring the DJ. It's such a disappointment that the word didn't go out. Like I said, I'm trying for the organizing committee next year, so it can only get even more fabulous.

The actual softball games were a lot of fun, but not much to write about (I'm definitely not a sports writer, so if there's any of our dear readers who had some opinions about the games, PLEASE write in). Most disappointing was the dang rang on Saturday morning which caused about 2 hour delays and (we heard) flooded out the fields at Harvest Middle School. Not sure how the directors handled that situation, we were pretty much at the Kennedy Park Fields for most of the action. There were exciting rivalries and great plays, tight pants and home runs...but pretty much gay softball looks like all other softball. Well, okay, maybe you wouldn't see this except at a gay softball tournament:

Sunday's fiesta was more like a day-long picnic, and trickled along during the second half of games happening that day. In fact, it seemed like the picnic was about 2-4 teams at a time while everyone else was playing games or elsewhere. It was cool seeing the players multiple times (at Friday night's registration cocktail party, at the drag show, at Cuvée, at the games on Saturday) but I think I would have felt really like a lurker if we had popped up at the barbecue as well. Hopefully for next year, instead of continuing to be just spirited and observant outsiders, we can get a group to take some field trips down to some SF home games this year, build up a cheering section and then we can be legitimate groupies for next year's tournament.

We do have some other recommendations for next year:
  • Napa needs to plan and coordinate it's business support, get the word out better, get a real "rainbow flag" campaign going and help educate businesses on how to live up to what that flag means (Joe's was supportive with the flags, but then Saturday night had an Elvis impersonator singing live. Not exactly very inviting to the gays.
  • Saturday night's event(s) need to be communicated well and planned together. We could have easily advertised both Cuvée's DJ/dance and the drag show together and given the players and teams a real reason to stay in town. If they stay downtown next year, we could plan a street party even (to give credit to the Downtown Association, this idea was on the table for this year, but the City wanted the party to quiet down early, so the organizers decided to try something else).
  • Concierge desks: help the players and fans really take advantage of the Valley. Have information desks at each of the tournament sites. Have real, gay locals staff the tables and tell our visitors where the best of the best is in the Valley. Let them know where we love to go eat and drink, be merry and have a fabulous gay time in Napa.
  • It would be amazing to see the Mayor write an exciting and truly real welcome letter to the tournament participants. Not only for the players sake, but also for the (invisible) gay community (and her constituents) that live here all year long.
  • We (The Valley's Other Fruit) should keep in mind that most of the players won't have online access while they are here so we should print out our recommendations (a bookmark? a small postcard with supporting businesses and our best bets?) and also get The Fruit's info out to the registrants right from the beginning.
  • Hopefully our "Best of" will become a yearly info guide with tons of input (nominations? voting?) from locals. Maybe we'll even get into KVONs or North Bay Bohemian's future guides as well (neither currently feature any LGBT recommendations)
Ours is definitely not the last word, so please write in to tell us if you had any run-ins with some softball hotties or saw the rainbow out and about where you'd least expect it. Did you attend any of the women's games or did large numbers of gay players turn Henry's into a one-night gay bar? What was your experience of Napa's big, gay, softball weekend debut?

Out on the scene: Just a taste from this weekend...

We're still resting up (maybe you are too?) after all the fun and people from The Golden Bear Classic gay softball tournament held in Napa this Memorial Day Weekend. To hold you over while I'm writing up the whole event, here are some of the more standout pics from the festivities:

Golden Bear Softball Tournament: Quick Updates

Just some quick updates on the tournament and events:
  • The rains have darkened the skies a little bit, but the games are still on. In fact, because of the wet weather, field play will go later tonight: 9p or 10p at NVC. If you make it out to any of the games, write in about your experience, send us your photos!

  • It actually happened: local business Downtown Joe's and Napa Billiards are flying huge rainbow flags, and proudly! Let us know if you see any at other establishments.

Let the big, gay weekend begin!

We'll probably not be posting much this weekend (unless there's late, breaking news) because we'll be out celebrating with the hundreds and hundreds of locals, gay softball tournament players and their supporters.

Click here for all our news and announcements on this weekend's events.

A few other updates:
  • There are games going all day at Harvest and Napa College/Kennedy fields, we've heard the best games--especially if they play each other--will include SF's Lonestar Grizzly's and SF's Spitfire. Click here for the pdf of all Saturday's scheduled games.

  • Sunday's picnic and awards banquet is scheduled 10:00 AM - End of Day (Food, Music, Frisbee and Volleyball) at Mulberry Park - Next to JFK/NVC
Please use the comments to let us know your favorite teams or what time you'll be heading to the picnic on Sunday...or (of course) any other news we should hear about!

Napa businesses support the gays

In addition to our featured recommendations for the tournament weekend and saturday night, we most definitely should go out of our way to support the following businesses which have told me they are excited about the tournament and showing support to the gays.

Special events will be held at the following businesses:
  • Cuvée Lounge: dj and full bar
  • Napa Billiards: drag show (no cover charge for tournament participants and supporters)
also, Napa Billiards is the only gay owned business I've seen in the Valley that displays the rainbow flag year round and specifically has events to welcome the gays
Special pricing will be offered at the following establishments:
  • Smoking Cat. Cafe: 10% discount (if you ask for it and) mention the tournament or blog!
  • Stave Wine Lounge: free nibbles fri/sat nights, artist show opening on sat night (the artist is family!)
  • GayNapaGetaways.com: free concierge services, call 707.266.8235 or Email: CharlesKimball@GayNapaGetaways.com

Also, look for rainbow flags of support at the following businesses:
  • Billco's
  • Downtown Joe's
  • First Squeeze Cafe/deli/catering: will be hosting concessions this weekend and is very excited to support the event
  • Small World Mediterranean Cafe
Did we miss anyone? (Not everyone let us know they were joining in the support) Let us know if you see a flag out or hear of something we didn't catch.

Mayor Techel's welcome to the gays

In speaking with event organizers, I was very excited to hear that the Mayor of Napa--our Mayor--would be writing a welcome letter to be included in the program for all of the tournament participants. How groundbrakingly un-Napa like and progressive! I wondered what she would say. After Mayor Henderson's proclaiming June gay pride month in Napa in 2002, who knew how Mayor Techel could top it? Maybe hang a huge rainbow flag in Veteran's Park on Main Street?

I feel like the Mayor took an easy way out by using her letter to only promote Napa's food, wine and scenic attractions. Maybe that's not unexpected, and maybe mentioning anything about gay progress or even a "Congratulations! You can get married now! Get married in the beautiful Napa Valley!" would have been out of place, but she went very (and disappointingly) business in her welcome letter. Yes...GREAT that she wrote a letter to welcome the gays, but at this crucial time there was a huge opportunity before her and she doesn't even say the word gay in it (remember, she's welcoming a group of hundreds and hundreds for a gay softball tournament). To me that is an opportunity squandered. The gesture is nevertheless appreciated. The text follows:

Greetings:

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Napa for the Golden Bear Classic softball tournament to be held in Napa Memorial Day weekend.

Whether you are visiting Napa for the first time or you’ve been to our City many times, you are in for a treat. The Napa Valley is beautiful this time of year, and the weather is nearly perfect. I hope you’ll have a chance to enjoy our many fine restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and a variety of historical and cultural attractions.

In Downtown Napa we have more than 15 Zagat-rated restaurants and about 20 wine tasting bars and tasting rooms. We are very proud that Ubuntu Restaurant was named one of the top two new restaurants in the US by the New York Times. Make sure to check out Veterans Memorial Park – it was just reopened in early May and is part of the riverwalk included in our Napa River Flood Protection Project. Just a block north on Main Street is the Napa Valley Opera house -a great venue with some amazing entertainment, At the south end of the river walk is the Historic Napa Mill. And on First Street in the Oxbow District, Copia is a one-of-a-kind wine, food and arts center and the new Oxbow Public Market is a great place to grab a bite to eat and have a glass of wine on the outside deck.

Special thanks should be given to the organizers for their hard work in ensuring that both the event and your stay in Napa are enjoyable. Best wishes to each of you in the tournament. We hope you enjoy your stay and will return soon.

Sincerely,

Mayor Jill Techel

Best bets for Sat night, May 24: drag show, lounge, food and parking

The Valley's Other Fruit gladly got in touch with the folks at Napa Billiards and Cuvée to see what grand plans they had for this big gay softball weekend. We highly recommend checking both of them out on Saturday... (and we'll probably grab some quick bites at the Tacos Michoacán truck on the way between the two)

Best bets for Saturday night:
  • Napa Billiards (& Special Drag Show!) 988 Lincoln Ave, Napa
Cinco de Mayo sealed our recommendation--we went and had an amazingly fun time. What's not to love? Good people, friendly bartenders, mixed crowd, fabulous female impersonators and drag show, go with some friends and have a blast. Pool tables, beer, jukebox and a full-on special presentation drag show (to welcome our softball playing gays, 'natch) at 11pm. You're sure to run into a latin hottie.

click image to enlarge or print

  • Cuvée Lounge (with DJ!) 1650 Soscol Ave, Napa
And you thought the food and ambiance was good in the restaurant? Cuvée is "rolling out the rainbow carpets": reserving a room and brining in a DJ...grab some drinks from the full bar, chat, flirt, dance and gay it up. Depending on the time you arrive, you could even order a bite to eat If the weather's warm, the outside patio will be perfect.

Late night eats:
  • Nations Giant Hamburgers (1441 3rd St., Napa)
Open til 2am on Sat. Huge, delicious hamburgers (ask them to go easy on the mayo), inexpensive menu, breakfast served all day. Pies and desserts.
  • Cafe Cicero (1245 1st St., Napa)
    Open til midnight on Sat.
  • Tacos Michoacan (Soscol @ 1st St., Napa)
Open til 10pm-ish, great mexican taco truck, located downtown location on Sat. night.
Parking in downtown Napa:
  • Parking isn't horrible in downtown at night, there's usually something relatively close by whatever your destination. Cuvée and Napa Billiards have parking lots (Napa Billiards is smaller, but overflow could be at RedRock across the street or along Lincoln). For downtown, try the garage on 2nd (at Main) or sometimes you'll get lucky at Wells Fargo at 1st and Main (but this is NOT public parking during the day) or across the street next to Downtown Joe's in the public lot. If you park downtown, Cuvee and Napa Billiards are less than a 15 minute walk.
Honorable Mentions:
    • Stave Wine Lounge (1149 First St, Napa)
32 wines on enomatic "tap", sparkling, beer, cocktails, FREE nibbles Sat. night for artist show opening, "Memories to Share" Dean Brittingham. Show/nibbles 6-9p, lounge open until 10p.
    • Billco's (1234 3rd St, Napa)
Regular old pool hall, but with 30+ beers on tap: Pliny the Younger, Franziskaner and all kinds of other yummy beers.
    • Henry's (823 Main St, Napa)
      Local dive, cheap drinks.
    • Downtown Joe's (902 Main St, Napa)
      Napa's microbrewery on the river.
Click here for a link to a map of these businesses and our other "Best of" recommendations for 2008.

Everything's gay to do this weekend!

Can you believe that there's actually going to be something to do in Napa this weekend?

I'm hoping that all of our readers understand that this weekend isn't just for our gay visitors...it's for us, too! So clear your calendars, change your hair appointments (or just arrange to go earlier so you can be looking GOOD) and make sure and shave your legs...

The Golden Bear Classic (gay) softball tournament isn't just bringing 1000s of gays to town, it's bringing lots of gay fun as well!
  • Friday night the players arrive, so it's check-in, registration and cocktails at the hotel.
  • Saturday day, everyone's invited to the fields at Silverado Middle School, Napa College/Kennedy Park, Harvest Middle School
  • Saturday night needs a whole post to itself, but basically all of downtown Napa is going to be taken over by the gays for fun, with the hotspots and places to be being Napa Billiards (drag show at 11p, no cover!) and Cuvée Lounge (DJ and full bar!)
  • Sunday day, back to the fields for more games
  • Sunday day/afternoon everyone's invited to Kennedy Park for awards, picnic, barbecue, frisbee and fun
  • Sunday night and Monday everyone will be doing their own thing, relaxing, enjoying Napa and the list of The Valley's Other Fruit's best recommendations
I've said it before, but I was talking to managers and owners again this afternoon, so it has me all excited: some shops aren't just welcoming shoppers, they're going to be PROUDLY welcoming with rainbow flags and specials. I'll post a list of which businesses are going the extra mile (and therefore which deserve our money) tomorrow. ;)

You joining us for any of the fun? Know of anything else going on or have any questions we can help clear up? Comment.

The Other Fruit Recommends: for our softball visitors

[This post is written as a special welcome for the thousand+ softball players and supporters that will be in town on Memorial Day weekend for the Golden Bear Classic tournament. This guide is not sponsored in any way, and is purely our compiled opinions from the editors, readers and friends of The Valley's Other Fruit.]

So you're gay, you're a softball player, and you're visiting the Napa Valley for Memorial Day Weekend. Napa doesn't really have any gay-only establishments. However, we do have gay-owned and gay-friendly...and God knows that us gays love art, wine, food, and anything over-the-top glamorous. Here's what we recommend...

(bold = must go, the rest are additional recommendations)

For Breakfast/Brunch:
  • ABC (Alexis Baking Company)
Bright, cozy, delicious breakfasts, lunches, baked goods, slightly pricey but worth it.
  • Gillwoods
Excellent brunch and huge variety on the menu for breakfast and lunch.
  • First Squeeze
Relaxed, friendly, casual style, smoothie, juice bar and deli, great service, specials (and free coffee with the combos!).
Mexican Food:
  • Taquería La Playita
Always full of latino families and delicious mexican food. catch a novela or soccer game on the TVs.
  • Tacos Michoacán
Best taco truck in town, usually on Salvador @ ByWayEast OR Soscol @ 1st St.
  • Villa Corona
More americanized than La Playita, but amazingly delicious food (my favorite: special chile relleno burrito, also try the shrimp burrito).
Lounge/Bar:
  • Cuvee
stylish and comfortable lounge, full bar, great patio, worthy of the gays.
  • Silverado Brewing Company
For when you're done with wine and just want a cold beer, friendly service.
  • Pacifico
Food's not the greatest, but free mariachi every Fri (and Cinco de Mayo), mostly local Latino hang out, gays at the bar.
Touristy (But worth the trip & time):
  • Castello di Amorosa
Over the top, beautiful style, amazing architecture, good wine. Who knew this was in the Valley? ($30)
  • Tram ride @ Sterling
Great views, meander the roof-top terrace as you taste the wines. Tram ride included with tour ($10)
Winery:
  • Mumm
Who wouldn't enjoy tasting bubbly in their beatiful hilltop solarium/tasting room? Photography exibit on site as well.
  • Artesa
Wine is pretty good, but the views, unique architecture and grounds are worth it.
  • Hess Collection
This "secret" is worth the way-off-the-main-roads trip. Good wine and free art gallery.
Relaxation/Spa:
  • Indian Springs Resort
After all those hard games, why not cruise upvalley and relax in the amazing waters and ambience of Indian Springs? Treat yourself and get a massage, too.
Foodie Find:
  • Oxbow Public Market
Napa Valley's answer to the San Francisco Ferry Building. (Not so cheap, but worth it) local gourmet from Taylor's Refresher, to Three Twins Organic Ice Cream, to RoliRoti...sip wine and enjoy a great plate of cheese, lunch or dinner on the river patio. 20+ merchants, daily produce stands.
  • Dean & DeLuca
Gourmet grocer features many local treats. Felicity is not currently employed.
  • Model Bakery
Long-time local bakery added Napa (@ Oxbow) to complement it's usual St. Helena location. Try the homemade english muffins! Or get a great lunch special.
Nature/Hike:
  • *Napa River Trail & Promenade Downtown
Beautiful and newly opened river walk links and opens 5 blocks of downtown Napa to the river.
  • Napa River Trail (South of Imola)
Eventually the River Trail will connect existing trails from Trancas (in N. Napa) to the marshes in American Canyon. For now, the most interesting part of the trail is from Imola to the South, past Napa College and out along the river and marshland out to Kennedy Park and the ball fields.
Coming Soon... (click here for the update)
  • Best parking in downtown Napa
  • Best quick bite to eat near the tournament fields
  • Best bets for Saturday night

Gay softball tournament updates: schedule, after parties and welcoming Napa

Photos by chrisuab, steevil

We have more information and some brief updates on plans for the Golden Bear Classic softball tournament to be held in Napa on Memorial Day weekend, starting first with local news:
  • The Valley's Other Fruit is working with the tournament's director & Napa's Downtown Association to roll out Napa's "rainbow carpets" in welcome and to help promote.
  • Watch for rainbow flags in windows and storefronts of local businesses that want to share in the love that weekend. Some will be offering specials (look for a special post closer to that weekend with a list of supporting businesses and those with special offers).
  • Napa's Mayor, Jill Techel, has written a letter of welcome to the tournament participants and supporters (way to go, Jill!) which will distributed with the programs (we'll post the letter as soon as we see it).
And info about the tournament's events and schedule:
  • Friday night: 70 teams of players arrive from around the state and bay area and will be checking in for the tournament and staying at American Canyon's Gaia. Opening night celebration for teams and players at the hotel.
  • Saturday day: tournament games played at Napa Valley College/Kennedey Park (open B/C div), Silverado Middle (open C div), Harvest Middle (open C div), Fairfield High (women's and open d div) school softball fields
  • Saturday night: teams, players, supporters (700+ people, not counting local gays and allies that show up) hit downtown Napa for some gay fun. Local bars, restaurants, lounges and cafes welcome players and supporters and turn momentarily into gay/lesbian bars.
  • Sunday day: tournament continues. Awards, recognition, picnic, barbecue, frisbee, etc. at Kennedy Park for most of the day.
  • Sunday night: some players, fans, teams stay another night to enjoy Napa. No special events planned (yet?).
Breaking news:
  • Already they're making plans to bring back the tournament for next year...and will move the hotel and opening night's celebration to somewhere in downtown Napa.

Will the rainbow flag fly in downtown Napa?

As part of our "rolling out the red carpets" for our hundreds of gay guests on Memorial Day Weekend, The Valley's Other Fruit has been in touch with local businesses to see if they, too, will be helping us with the warm welcome. We've contacted local restaurants and bars to see if they'd offer any specials and to see which businesses will visibly offer a welcome by flying the rainbow flag that weekend.

If you know of any businesses, restaurants, bars, etc. that might like to participate, please encourage them and let us know!

We'll be posting a list of businesses that are going out of their way to be welcoming...check back here for more info.

What do you recommend to 900 queer softball players?

(not quite what we mean by queer softball, but probably what some Napans might picture)

(will Napa be confused if this is what gay softball really looks like?)

It was buried among a handful of other posts the other day, so I'm not sure how many of you caught the news: I'm talking about the gay softball tournament in Napa on Memorial Day weekend. Yeah...our beloved, closeted hometown is hosting a gay softball tournament with 900 players from 50+ teams from all around (no hometown team, obviously).

Of course, it's up to us, the local gays, to make sure our town welcomes them full force.

Additionally, The Valley's Other Fruit will be posting hometown recommendations for our visitors.

I know you all haven't been saying too much lately, but what places would you recommend to our queer, sporty guests for:
  • Best spot for brunch?
  • Best place for Latin flavor?
  • Best bar/lounge?
  • Best tourist spot that's actually worth going?
  • Best winery to visit?
  • Best spa or place to relax?
  • Best foodie find?
  • Most gay-friendly place?
  • Wildcard: what else do you recommend?

If they're playing with balls... Gay Softball in Napa?

(I hear gay athletes take their sports seriously, so I'll try to avoid any (more) unnecessary puns.)

News came in today that there will be a huge gay softball tournament in Napa on Memorial Day weekend.

I have to admit we're pretty excited (giddy, even?). After lamenting how little gay activities there are in the Valley, this comes our way... Called the Golden Bear Classic, it is hosted by the San Francisco Gay Softball League and will include 70 teams of 18 players each. That will effectively increase Napa's gay out population exponentially--for that weekend at least.

More details:
  • Event weekend: May 23-25
  • Registration on Friday night
  • Games on Sat/Sunday at Napa Valley College, Harvest and Silverado ball fields
  • Open B, C, D Division and Women's Divisions
  • Picnic and Awards Banquet on Sunday
  • Tournament website: http://www.sfgsl.org/gbc-08-index.shtml
I'm working to get more information about the games, events, etc. Hopefully there's an opportunity for The Valley's Other Fruit to get insider access? We'd definitely be willing to coordinate a tailgate or afterparty...

Updates soon... Special thanks to "Daithi" for the tip.
