Reminder: Napa Unity League monthly mixer tonight, Mon, Mar 1; donor advised fund opportunity

I told you about this yesterday, so I hope you're going:
The Napa Unity League holds their monthly mixer on the first monday evening of each month. That's tonight.

An addition to tonight's mixer's agenda from Deb Stallings:
I hope you are making plans to attend the NVUL Monthly Mixer on Monday, March 1 beginning at 6 PM. We’ll enjoy a special St. Patty’s Day-themed event, and the chance to enjoy the company of friends old and new.

At the meeting, we’ll discuss (briefly, we promise!) an opportunity to establish a Donor Advised Fund in the name of Napa Valley Unity League. The Horizons Foundation is an LGBT Foundation that serves the nine Bay Area county region and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. In 2009, I became the Director of Development and Gift Planning at Horizons. Since then, I have seen how other service organizations like San Francisco FrontRunners and the MAXfund use the program. I think it might just be a good fit for NVUL too.

In its simplest terms, a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is like a charitable checking account. A person or in our case, a group, creates a named fund such as “Napa Valley Unity League LGBT Charitable Fund”. It can then make and/or accept tax-deductible contributions into the account. It can then make grants to any other non-profit it chooses from the funds in the DAF account.

Here are three important characteristic of a DAF:

1) Any contribution into the fund is tax-deductible using Horizons Foundations' 501(c)3 status.

2) We can grant to most any non-profit organization, and in some cases, organizations that are not non-profits if we can demonstrate that the funds are for a public benefit. Please note that:
  • The grant amount must be a minimum of $250
  • Grants cannot be made in exchange for any goods or service, like tickets to an event or for any political purpose
  • In accepting a grant from our DAF, the benefiting organization confirms that they do not discriminate against LGBT people.
3) Funds deposited into the account can only be withdrawn through the granting process, so once the funds are there, they can only be used for a charitable purpose.

Why might we decide to do this?

1) Donations to the fund are tax-deductible: This will gives NVUL the flexibility to help lots of organizations, without having to become a 501(c)3 ourselves. Once the fund is established we can make further contributions to it in support of other causes we want to support.

2) Our DAF Fund wouldn’t change the way we run our day-to-day operations, or how we do events. We’d simply distribute the proceeds of events through our DAF. We’ll continue to separately account for all of our operating funds.

3) We put the “lavender stamp” on money we raise to give to other organizations. It’s labeled and recognized as money raised by the LGBT community. This way when COPE, VOICES, American Cancer Society or Queen of the Valley prints their annual reports, they will recognize the Napa Valley Unity League LGBT Charitable Fund as the donor. Our LGBT community will be publicly acknowledged for our efforts that have too long gone unidentified.

More info:

I am happy to discuss this further with you individually, and of course we’ll take a few minutes for group Q&A on Monday as well. There’s lots more info on the Horizons Foundation website www.horizonsfoundation.org.

You can read all about the Donor Advised Fund program, download the DAF Guide and more at http://www.horizonsfoundation.org/page/donors/daf#benefits

It’s an important part of Horizons’ mission to help LGBT people meet their philanthropic goals, so if I can provide any information at all, please don’t hesitate to be in touch. My contact info is dstallings@horizonsfoundation.org , or by phone 415.398.2333x103.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the mixer on Monday!

Yours in Unity,

Deb Stallings

Guest writer needed for Unity League mixer: July 7, 6p

Calling for a guest writer!

Today, the Napa Valley (formerly North Bay) Unity League will be holding their monthly mixer, to gather and chat and...well, I dunno. (This is that group that I told y'all about that was intstrumental in having Napa proclaim June gay pride month, among other progressive gay accomplishments!)

I haven't heard much about or from the Unity League in a couple years, and have been meaning to go to their monthly mixers to see what's up and what's new. Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it to today's meeting do to work related commitments.

Would anyone like to go and "cover" it for me? Let us know what it's like and what's upcoming?

The Unity League mixer is at 6p, today, July 7, and will be held at River Pointe Napa Valley (that cottage-y village of vacation rentals right on the river on Lincoln where the river trail ends...kinda across from Compadres/River City).

Please let me know if you'll be going and if you'll write about what it's like.

More information about the League can be found at their website, although it's copyright is dated 2006, I am not sure how current the whole site is.

AIDS Walk Napa Valley Oct 11 & the September Unity League Mixer

So finally, I went to check out the Napa Valley Unity League's (former North Bay Unity League) monthly mixer and meeting. I have no idea what took me so long to go...it was a good group of people and a great way to connect with the community. Go, gays! (I was told that usually a group of 20, 30 or sometimes 50 gather for the monthly meetings, although due to the holiday it was about 15 of us on Monday night, divided pretty evenly among women and men.) I'll for sure be posting about upcoming meetings to keep you all informed (and for those familiar with blogging, added a tag for "unity league" so you can keep up to date with all their latest events in one spot). I think they might be talking me into updating their web page (that, a while back, I had complained wasn't updated since 2006).

For those who have never been, their monthly mixer is pretty much meet and greet with appetizers and beverages (both of the adult and non-adult kind): wine, beer, soda, water, chips and dips and fried chicken, etc. were available for all. They ask for a $5 donation to cover the expenses and so that the monthly gatherings can continue. About an hour and a half into the time (it started at 6, no end time was given), they called us together for some announcements and then after about 15 minutes is was back to the regular party.

While at the September meeting, I learned that the Unity League is responsible for "hosting" three, big, yearly events:
  • Pride week (usually in June, although none this year)
  • Napa Valley's Academy Awards, and
  • AIDS Walk Napa Valley
This meetings focus was on AIDS Walk, an event to be held on October 11th at the Veteran's Home in Yountville, 9a to noon. This year's theme is: "Diverse walks of life, partnered for a cure."

From the event web page:
This year marks the 17th years for this annual event to raise awareness and funding for HIV/AIDS Support Services conducted by the Care Network at the Queen of the Valley Hospital. Treatment includes counseling, case management, emotional support, medical support, in-home case visits and more.

Walk day activities include refreshments, raffles, team competition, face painting, balloons, and all the fun is set to fun with everyone’s favorite DJ Rotten Robbie! Additionally KVON/KVYN will be hosting a live remote with everyone's favorite "Kellie in the Morning" on location and live broadcasting from the walk!

The Care Network at the Queen of the Valley is a not for profit 501c3 so all contributions are tax deductable. For Information call Scott Butler - 707.738.4056 or email cedwards@winetasting.com
More information and forms, registration, etc. are available on the event's website at http://napavalleyaidswalk.com/

Anyone down to join a team?

Napa Unity League Mixer Monday night, May 4

The Napa Valley Unity League's monthly mixer is this Monday, May 4 from 6 to 8pm at Riverpointe Napa.

This month's topics include, "the Unity League’s team for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life fundraiser... [and an update] on how the plans for Napa Valley Pride 2009 are coming along."

To attend the mixer, they kindly request:
  • us to show up with our bad-ass gay selves (and bells on, of course)
  • $5 donation, for those that can afford it
For those who have never heard about this group, the Unity League is Napa's group of gays and allies who are behind the yearly AIDS Walk and Napa Valley Oscar Night Party. They hold monthly mixers and are focused on Social Networking, Community Service, Health & Education and Social Justice.

Visit the Unity League's homepage here, or see what else we've had to say about them on this blog.

See you Monday night?

Annual Napa Unity League Holiday Soiree, Mon, Dec 7

Not to be confused with the other big, gay, Christmas/Holiday party (from Guerilla Gay Bar), the Napa Valley Unity League is also throwing a bash. We now have two, big, gay holiday parties to go to...Looks like I'll have to get another fab outfit together...

The Napa Valley Unity League is an organization whose mission is to enhance the sense of community for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (LGBTQ) citizens & their families, friends and allies through Social Networking, Community Service, Health & Education and Social Justice. They throw their mixer every first Monday of the year and traditionally are the big sponsors of the Napa Valley AIDS Walk, the Napa Valley Academy Awards Party and Napa Valley Pride events.

Here's the details on this year's Holiday Soiree:
Monday, December 7
The Annual Unity League Holiday Soiree!
It’s a great way to kick-off the holidays!
  • Relax, rejoice and reconnect with friends, old and new, during the "Wine & Cosmo Reception" from 6:00 to 6:30 pm
  • Enjoy a tasty dinner courtesy of the Napa Valley Unity League
  • Show your appreciation to those who support our community during an awards presentation
Get into the giving season with two fantastic opportunities:

1) Help the Unity League support VOICES Napa Valley as they help young people transition from foster care to independent living

GIVE - donate one or more $10 gift cards from Target or Walmart that will be donated to VOICES to give to their youth (please - $10 denominated gift cards only)

RECEIVE - get one entry to win an AMAZING Napa Valley Dining and Entertainment gift package for each $10 gift card you donate

2) Enjoy "Guilt-free Regifting" during a hilarious holiday gift exchange. Just bring a wrapped, unwanted or "not quite right" gift that you have received in the past. You'll get the chance to exchange it for something more fabulous. Who knows? Maybe that Chia Pet, Bedazzler or Snuggie that you received is exactly what someone else had on their wish list! Napa Unity League Mixer, Mon, Sep 6, 6-8p

Monday, Labor day, September 6, 2010 is Napa's next Unity League mixer and meeting. A social gathering w/ good people, bites to eat and usually a great local winery pouring something tasty.

With a mission of enhanc[ing] the sense of community for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (LGBTQ) citizens & their families, friends and allies through: social networking, community service, health & education and social justice, the folks from the Napa Valley Unity League are the main organizers for Napa's Pride, the Academy Awards party/fundraiser and AIDS Walk Napa Valley, among many other events.

Here's the lineup for this month's meeting:
  • This month we'll be celebrating Labor Day with a BBQ on the lawn above the pool at Riverpointe
  • Folks from Honig Winery will be on hand to pour their wines and talk about their facility and operation
  • We'll find out more about the 19th Annual Napa Valley AIDS Walk which takes place in Yountville on Saturday, October 30
  • We still have a few Napa Valley Pride dog tags ($3 each or 2 for $5) and wristbands ($2 each or 3 for $5)
  • Meet great folks and find out what's going on in the Napa Valley and the surrounding areas
There's a Facebook event page if you'd like to RSVP or peek at who's saying they're going.

Additionally, Josie just sent us out a special reminder about a community service project she and TJ are encouraging our support on:
I just wanted to remind people it is not too late to pick up some school supplies to donate to the Teachers Resource Center (formerly Change for Kids). Teachers have it tough these days and many spend up to $500 a year out of their own pockets so that all of their students can have needed supplies. There are still deals on paper, pens, notebooks and such at Office Depot, Target, Staples and Wal-Mart.

Bring your donation to the mixer and I will deliver it to the TRC. I talked to a teacher friend yesterday who said copy paper is really a strong need for most teachers. She is copying old textbooks to use in creative ways in her classes. Thanks in advance to all who can help.

Unity League contingent in Napa's 4th of July parade: vid, pics, write-up

Above is the embedded video (click through to the blog if you can't see it) and here is Chris Edwards' write-up about the Unity League contingent in the City of Napa's 2nd Annual 4th of July parade (use the comments section to add your own thoughts):
Great job by TJ Danser in leading this year’s parade contingent in the Napa Sunrise Rotary’s 4th of July Parade!

The parade was led by Fish and gang carrying the Unity League Banner. DJ Rotten Robbie and his partner Eric walked the streets hand in hand alongside Deb and Carol’s Smart Car. They inspired the crowds concerning unity and equality for all.

Michele, Josie, Scott, Wally the dog and I rode in the convertible escorted by David, TJ, our friend on the bike whose name has slipped my mind as well as Lola and Mickey. The highlight was Terri Curd with rainbow feathers accompanied by a huge smile waving from the fully decked-out Cristal Blue Carriage limo supplied by Chris & Bill. With Terri’s daughter and friends in tow, the crowds were inspired with a good cheer and diversity. We had a few new faces and others helping out as well, whose names have now slipped me after a glass of wine.

During the live broadcast of the parade on 99.3 THE VINE, “Kellie in the Morning” suggested we had the most festive and colorful contingent to a huge cheer from the crowd watching.

Thanks to all, especially TJ, for reminding us of the fun and that we need to participate as we are diverse colors, faces and ideas making up the fabric of our Napa Community.

Thanks all until year!
Chris Edwards

P.S. – Don’t forget about the special Napa Valley Unity League Mixer & Meeting on Monday, July 5th! We’ll be meeting outdoors on the patio by the pool at Riverpointe Napa Valley starting at 6:00 p.m.

This weekend in gay Napa: AIDS Walk, Guerrilla Gay Bar, Unity League Mixer, Freedom to Marry Interfaith Service

Work has been crazy this week, but I wanted to post a warning shot to remind you (or announce) of all the good gay stuff that's coming this weekend:
  • Sat morning: AIDS Walk Napa Valley (Yountville)
  • Sat midday: Guerrilla Gay Bar (Yountville)
  • Sun early morning: one hour extra sleep due to Daylight's Savings end
  • Monday evening: Unity League Monthly Mixer (Napa)
  • Monday evevning: Freedom to Marry Interfaith Service (Vallejo)
I have scant information about what's fun for the gays and gals on Halloween around here. Any ideas?

I promise I'll have more details, tomorrow. :)
