Many (many!) films that portray life as a gay, lesbian or questioning (let alone tackle the complexity of being a person that is bi or trans) are more hokey than thought provoking and more cheesy than true-to-life. It's great to see a movie with characters that are "like me", but some definitely do a better job than others...
Desert Hearts is definitely a fave! I loved how the story line developed, the attractive characters, and the authentic feelings of each lead character. Plus, the sex scenes were HOT! The whole thing felt so real, and down to earth. Plus, I liked the setting, out on a ranch (being a Montana girl, I can relate....) I'm not exactly current on lesbian movies, but this old chestnut rates as the best in my book. Another favorite, though not strictly a lesbian film, is Antonia's Line. This film shows powerful women succeeding in their world of a traditional European village. There is a great lesbian romance in the film, which is accepted as normal by the rest of the players. I loved the village life and the marvelous characters that brought the film to life.
My favorite romantic comedy has to be "Trick." Absolutely hilarious. Tori Spelling (believe it or not) puts in a great performance. Just a heck of a lot of fun!
My favorite drama, not counting "Brokeback Mountain" is "Latter Days." It's very well written, acted and directed. Basic story - LA party boy falls for a Mormon missionary.
I like some of the old school movies... When I was a teenager I loved "The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls In Love" One that I still watch is "Everything Relative" Newer and ... funny... "But I'm a Cheerleader" and "Better than Chocolate" All lesbian movies... Except for the cheerleader one. :)
Big Eden is my all time favorite, and a must see if you haven't already. Jeffery, Broken hearts club, and Pricillia Queen of the Desert, are also ones not to miss. And, yes, Trick, and Latter Days are way up on my list. Happy Texas is a gay friendly movie that is worth seeing and another feel good movie. Steve Zahn is great in it.

But I'm a Cheerleader is hilarious! It's so over the top -- I love it. That being said, I believe there are very, very few good lesbian movies.
