Use emotions for good, not evil!

This bit of horrible tugging at the emotions courtesy of the lovely folks at the Family Research Council, and appeared in newspapers over Father's Day weekend.

  1. I have a feeling that regular people can kind of sense of embarrassing desperation behind these kind of scare tactics. Hopefully they do more damage to the FRC's goal than good. It seems a little petty and definitely exclusionary.

Last weekend I went home to visit my family, and I got up the courage to talk about the marriage amendment. My parents are pretty religious and conservative, and I know my mom had at least on one occasion made it clear that she didn't like using the term marriage for same-sex couples.

I brought up the amendment anyways. I was happy to discover that my older brother is against the ban on gay marriage, and is going to vote against the amendment. Later I was talking about politics with my parents (we have different opinions on a lot of things) but I was overjoyed to know that they think a ban on gay marriage is ridiculous and that people should have the right to love whomever they choose.

Those are two votes that the religious right was counting on, but that they're not going to get. I'm sure if you asked my parents what they thought a year and a half ago, they might have felt very different, but I guess having a gay son changes things a little.

There might be something to Gaynapa's idea of coming out to people in the hopes that their compassion wins out over their fear.
