Urgent: support bay area LGBTQ youth in Concord this Sat.

Not sure if any of our readers got to experience queer friendly dances when they were younger, but growing up in Napa, in high school I didn't even know that such a thing existed... (I was in gay denial at the time anyways.) Here is an opportunity to support one in the Bay Area.

Through a "friend of The Fruit" we were asked to help spread the word to support LGBTQ youth from around the Bay Area that will be attending a dance in Concord at Olympic High School.

They are looking for adult supporters AND youth from Napa (or youth from anywhere around the Bay) are invited to attend the dance. The dance is for 14-20 year old LGBTQ youth and their allies. You can buy tickets at the door...

If you have even a few hours this Saturday evening (7:30p - 11p) and can get to Concord...

Here are the details:

Hello everyone,

I'm reaching out to ask for your help. Youth in our programming have been planning a dance for LGBTQ youth and their allies this Sat, 5/10, at Olympic High School. The event has been widely publicized, we have DJs lined up from Wild 94.9, and the youth organizers have had a lot of RSVP's already - from all over the Bay Area.

Here's the ask for help.
In a planning meeting today, we were informed that the Concord police are concerned about the safety for these youth -- they're predicting a potential protest, and/or exposure to harassment by local youth and adults. Fear is being invoked about whether or not the dance is a good idea - or will be safe enough - at this point.

We need as many allies and supporters to wrap a web of support around the dance - literally around Olympic High School - this Sat, 5/10, 7:30-11pm.

Details:
Sat., May 10 -- 7:30-11pm (set-up at 6:30pm, and post-dance as people go to their cars & BART)
Olympic High School, Main Building

We need people willing to stand outside in the parking lot, welcoming people and ensuring a safe entrance to the dance - and safe exit...

If you can come for a couple of hours - even an hour, this will make a tremendous difference for a lot of young folks! ...Help spread the word!

Organizers say even an hour of time is helpful, and that you should bring a flashlight. Concord police will be working together with the organizers to ensure a welcoming, fun and safe time for all involved.

If you plan on going, please use our comments section to let us know, maybe those interested can go down together (gas being so expensive and all...).
