Equality resolution before Napa City Council today

[Update: some details from the Unity League, included below.]

Don't forget: If there's any way you can show up at today's afternoon City Council Meeting (scheduled for 3:30p), please do so. A group of straight supporters of equality are planning to be there (and one Napa resident is even planning a fast to support the cause), it would be sad if we didn't show up for our own cause.

The Napa City Council holds its meetings at:
955 School St
Napa, CA 94559
(707) 257-9503

Renee Fannin, organizer of many recent local activism events and marches for equality, says that it's likely that Van Gorder's Equality Resolution won't show up on the agenda until later in the meeting (3:45p? 4? later?), and that public comment will continue for a while. So even if you have to show up late, still show up!

For some reason, Van Gorder's resolution isn't even listed on the agenda for today.

We've spoken about this resolution before. So has the Napa Register, with its usual dose of hostile and agressive back and forth commentary. The Register predicts that four of five Councilmembers will vote No on the City taking up a resolution in support of marriage equality for same-sex couples, most citing that (in my words) "the City has more important, local work to focus on" instead of "wasting their time" with resolutions that will have no impact. --Except for the impact of it's same-sex residents and others feeling that their City has their backs, of course.

Here's the info from the Unity League:
...City Council members are saying this social issue isn't City business - they don't want to deal with it. But they need to know that we expect leadership from our leaders, not cowardly evasion on difficult issues. How can they represent us if they don't value and protect us and our families?

We need EVERYONE who supports fairness and equality to PLEASE gather at City Hall on TUESDAY, MARCH 17 beginning at 3:30 PM or all soon after that as possible. We will have the chance to make PUBLIC COMMENTS beginning at approximately 4:00. We need as many people there by then as possible! Each person can speak for 5 minutes. With enough people willing to speak we can keep council listening throughout the afternoon, giving more and more of our supporters time to get there at the end of their workday.

Please - please - please come out to support this resolution. Let's remind our elected officials that government is BY the PEOPLE, FOR the PEOPLE and that means ALL PEOPLE...equally!

If you are planning to come to the meeting - and especially if you are willing to speak, please email deb@debstallings.com so we can get some gauge of how many people we are expecting.
