Been reading on my gay blogs (here, here and here) about how North Carolina gave up on trying to pass a law to protect students from school bullies. They didn't give up because they didn't have enough support in the legislature (they did have enough votes), they gave up because of last minute lobbying against the bill from some Christian groups who say that bullying protection would lead to other privileges for gays:
The bill was controversial because it listed "sexual orientation" and other characteristics as reasons schoolchildren might be the targets of bullying. Groups such as the Christian Action League and the N.C. Family Policy Council did not want the term in state law, saying that gay-rights groups would use it to leverage other rights. [NewsObserver]This brings up several points that I invite comments on:
- How did bullying (especially around sexuality, orientation) affect you in school?
- Thoughts on where exactly is the disconnect between Christianity, protecting the outcast and passing a measure to protect kids from bullies?
- Do the gay-straight alliances--which I hear, especially at New Tech & Vintage High Schools are very well supported--have any effect on bringing more understanding and less harassment to our school campuses?
