Big drag revue @ Petaluma's Infusions this Thursday

Get ready for the 4th of July by having a fabulous night before. Could we dare call it July 4th eve?

Celebrate your gay independence at Infusions in Petaluma this Thursday, July 3. Sure...it's their weekly gay party, but it's different this week. Firstly: no work on Friday! Secondly, HUGE drag revue happening.

Anyone want to go?

SF Pride: Valley's Other Fruit slideshow

We didn't have a booth or anything, but here are some of our pics from SF Pride 2008. Apparently you can add your own pics to our slideshow, so if you are from Napa or nearby and have great pics to share, feel free to add them!

Happy Pride 2008!

If you are reading this in an RSS reader and not on our webpage, you're probably missing out on our Pride photo slideshow!

SF Pride: Napa invisible again

So we stayed out a lil' bit late on Saturday night, went to Temple's Queen party thrown by Energy 92.7 and had such a great time that we really hard time waking up on Sunday for the parade. We did, however, make it...and just in time to see PFLAG's float. You may be wondering what my obsession is with the PFLAG float. Well, three years ago at my first Pride parade, when I saw the PFLAG float I saw Napa's little sign and felt like it was the first time that Napa was out with me. It was a little glimmer of hope that Napa did have gays and I could comfortably be one of them...

However...this year was a bit of a disappointment. The parade was as fabulous as usual (if not more) with tons of people and the usual color and excitement that comes with it. And as we came up and the steps and onto the sidewalk and I excitedly saw PFLAG heading down Market Street, I whipped out my camera and snapped some shots of representation from towns like Merced and Placerville and Petaluma...but no Napa this year. How disappointing.

BUT, don't get me wrong. Pride was a blast. More pics, soon!

Do these commercials make me look gay?

So Heinz isn't the first (or definitely not the last) to run a gay aimed commercial. As we mentioned, however, in an earlier post, Heinz took a risk, ran the ad, and then, after getting 200 complaints (I still don't see how that is a lot) decided to pull the ad and save their image. Except now all the gay community is upset. Well, just for fun and just because, here are a handful of other ads from around that cater to a more--let's say, discerning--type of person. Enjoy.and then, just for fun...If you are reading this through an RSS reader, chances are you are missing out on this HILARIOUS SNL clip for gay beer, featuring Chris Farley and Adam Sandler. Thanks to www.homovision.tv for some of the codes.

Eye candy to hold you over Pride weekend

Here are some visuals from Pride SF to keep you entertained during our writing-lull this weekend. Thinking of you all... ;)

Google's pride

I just noticed this: If you go to Google.com and search for "gay pride" the divider on the right hand of the search results (before the ads) is a rainbow! How gay is that?

Queerin' it up this weekend at SF pride

We won't be posting this weekend because we're going to be celebrating our rainbow selves (and your rainbow selves, too) down in San Francisco for Pride. I swear (cross my heart) that I'll do a write up on Monday about Pride in SF this weekend and try to wring as much Napa-ness out of it as I can. Maybe a pic of Napa's rep (or at least little sign) in PFLAG's contingency?

I imagine it will be pretty exciting, with a million people expected in SF just for Pride, and especially with the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of gay marriage a month ago. What a month to be proud of!

I hear the big parties tomorrow night are:
For more info on SF Pride and it's events, go here: United by Pride, Bound for Equality
Wishing you all the best, most proud and queer weekend ever! Go ahead, explode in a euphoric moment of glitter, rainbow and unicorns! We deserve it!

Also, because we're not at home, comments will be unmoderated so you can share tips, info, parties, memories and more with immediate gratification. (This is a test run, so please behave!)

You * me! You really * me!

You might have noticed, loyal readers, that posts on The Valley's Other Fruit now have an option to be rated by stars, from "one" (hated it) to "five" (loved it). Maybe this will get all you lurkers involved. It seems like quick click voting (like our polls) gets more responses than comments. At least we'll be getting some sort of feedack!

Go ahead, us to death!

GLAAD media awards tonight on (where else?) Bravo

If you're not going to the free concert in Veteran's Park tonight, (and/or if you're just a home-body) here's some alternate plans for you from the Detroit Free Press (and a loyal Fruit reader):
TONIGHT'S MIGHT-SEE: "GLAAD Media Awards" (7 p.m.) and "Brokeback Mountain" (2005, 9 p.m.), Bravo. First are highlights of awards by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

GLAAD gave honors for TV drama ("Brothers & Sisters"), comedy ("Ugly Betty") and reality show ("Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List"), plus movies ("Stardust," "The Bubble") and more. Special awards went to Sharon Stone, Janet Jackson and Rufus Wainwright.

Then Bravo airs a previous GLAAD winner. "Brokeback Mountain" also had well-deserved Oscars for its director (Ang Lee), script and music, plus nominations for picture, cinematography and the superb work of the late Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams.

"OMG he's trying to style my hair!"

As Joe says, "not very PC...but damn funny. Wait for the last line."

National HIV testing day: 25% don't know

I don't know of any "special" events or testing going on today, but thanks to 365Gay.com for the sobering reminder:

"Today is National HIV Testing Day and the Centers for Disease Control has issued an ominous warning - about one-fourth of the more than one-million people living with HIV in the United States don’t know they are infected. National HIV Testing Day is an annual campaign organized by the National Association of People with AIDS. The theme of this year's campaign is significant – "Take the Test. Take Control."

"Knowing your HIV status empowers you to help prevent the spread of the disease" said Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director, of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention at the CDC. "If you are infected, you can take steps to protect your health and that of your partners as well as seek life-extending medical treatment. People who learn they are not infected can take steps to help ensure they remain uninfected.""

In Napa, you can get tested at:
and, open during the school year (Aug 18 - June 1):
  • Napa Valley College Health Center (details)
    2277 Napa-Vallejo Hwy
    Portable Bldg 2250
    707-259-8005

or, if you're at the North end of the Valley, it might be quicker to head over the hills:
[Update: testing site information current as of December 1, 2009. For more updated informaton, check HIVtest.org or text your zip code to KNOWIT (566948)]

Please let us know where else you know of that you can get (free? low-cost?) testing in the Valley or nearby.

It wasn't always a parade...

Here is some footage of and interviews with the first participants (via Joe.My.God. via the NY City Gay & Lesbian Community Center) in the very first Pride Parade. Except that in June, 1970, it wasn't called Pride, it was called "The Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day" and it wasn't a parade it was an "almost-militant" march.

Youtube clip of the march and interviews, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj1AlL43Y0o

We'd love to hear from any Napa (or nearby) locals who participated in any of the early years of the gay movement... And, is it me, or does Napa still feel like it's in the early years?

Bring back the mayo!

Now there's an online petition to bring back the mayo commercial:
"We petition Heinz to reinstate its Deli Mayo TV advertisement following complaints from 200 people as to its 'offensive' and 'inappropriate' content. We feel that the decision to withdraw the advert is wrong in the face of a small number of narrow-minded individuals. By doing so, Heinz have given the impression that they would prefer to cater for the homophobic than the free-thinking, and the decision has provoked upset, brand distrust and outrage among the LGBT community and outside of it. Do not bow down to these homophobic individuals"
Add your name to the 3400+ who've already signed, here.

Is it inappropriate to post about "underground" gay happenings?

A few friends have commented to me (in person, NOT on the blog) that our post about cruising at the grape crusher was inappropriate and NOT something we should be writing about on the blog.

I think they were trying to say that it's not cool to "call people out" especially about (relatively) private things like cruising (and other potentially sexual activity). I get it. I mean, even though it is published in a nationally available gay travel guide, the blog does make the information much more available (and a lot less discrete). But I really wonder how many un-gay-friendly folks are actually reading this? That's a rhetorical question, of course.

So what do you think? If this blog is about helping us connect to each other and to what is happening...and if part of the awesomeness about this blog is to help people discover new and exciting things that are often left unpublicized... When is it and what is appropriate to post?

Celebrate marriage equality with NV Demos

Democrats of Napa Valley host a marriage equality and "engagement party" tonight at their meeting. This is the grand celebration I told you about last week.
"Join us Wednesday evening, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. to elect new officers and for our Engagement Party to celebrate the California Supreme Court’s landmark ruling ending discrimination against same-gendered couples. DNV invites the public, including any couples that have become engaged or married since the historic decision to the celebration!"
Oh, and "Wedding attire optional", of course. The party will be held at Democrat Headquarters, 1015 Coombs Plaza in Napa Town Center (across from the former Bookends Book Store). There is no charge, but please RSVP to to 707/320-2324 or info@democratsofnapavalley.org

Napa pride parade coming in early July

No, it's not what it seems like (nor what I was hoping for), but the title surprised me, too. This banner was seen hanging in several locations in downtown Napa recently.

(Click to see the full size image)

Apparently, this year's downtown's 4th of July Festival is featuring a "Hometown Pride Parade". I don't think the City would intentionally taunt us and maybe I just have pride on the brain... but it is a uniquely interesting choice of words for the parade. I would have thought that the City would be extra careful with their wording, especially after the Town & Country Fair naming fiasco (with almost as much bigoted backlash as recent gay-marriage articles, check out the comments section in the Register's article on this year's fair theme: "Fiesta de Napa").

Also, the characters they are using to illustrate the banner are also, well, different... I would guess that the main guy on the rocket is a Mexicano (or a really tan white guy?) with his white wife and biracial children... Oh, Napa...

Funny thing is I'll probably still go check out the street fair and fireworks. Silly me. Now if all the hot queer folk would just wear something really obvious, we'd be set.

Sweet mayo gone sour?

Apparently jolly old England couldn't handle the gay (maybe not even gay--but, same-sex?) kiss in a sweet mayonnaise commercial.

Heinz is pulling the commercial after receiving over 200 (is that a lot?) complaints.

We spoke about it first last Wednesday (and posted the clip), and had thought it might cause some controversy.

Reports from Pride(s)

Please comment freely: what Pride events are you going to/have you gone to?

Was that you in the bushes? Napa's "Cruisy Spot" (according to Damron)

So, I attended GLAM's grand opening party weeks back in downtown Petaluma and won some swag to bring home: A 2008 DAMRON travel guide. Maybe I'm not as in-the-gay-know as I thought: I had never heard of the Damron guide... It seems pretty handy, has thousands and thousands of listings of gay-friendly spots around the world: restaurants, accomodations, shops, bars, and my favorite for the most interesting entries: "Cruisy Spots". (Who does their research on that one?)

According to Damron 2008, Napa's one Cruisy Spot is the:
"VISTA POINT [AYOR] Route 12/121 bridge over Napa River, Napa Parking lot & nearby woods N of bridge on E side"

Yeah. The Grape-Crusher. Ha! I had heard rumors (but of course, have never gone myself) that this was a hot spot for gay-sex pick-ups, but I guess I didn't really have any hard (no pun intended) evidence.

By the way, the [AYOR] in Damron's listing means "At Your Own Risk" if you hadn't figured that out. Isn't at your own risk implied in picking up someone for gay sex at a roadside vista point?

Maybe I'll have to write up an investigave report on this one... Where exactly are these "nearby woods" that the Damron folks speak of? Are there special hand-signals or toe-taps to let others know that you aren't there just for the beautiful scenery? Where else are the hot cruising spots in and around the Valley?

Mooched post: Sing out, Louise

There was a post this morning on Joe.My.God. that, in my extra-early morning delirium cracked me up (okay, I'll admit it, I was singing along, too, as fabulous as the morning sun, and I don't even know the words!)--and fits nicely with the barrage of videos I have been posting lately. It's a guy on YouTube singing an immitation of Patti Lupone singing Mama Rose. I know this is a verbatim rip of Joe's post (hence my title), but it's early and I love Joe's blog and if you enjoy then maybe you'll subscribe, and if not this post will slowly fade away into history...

Enjoy, and happy Thursday. As Joe says:
OK, so after reading rave after rave about Patti Lupone's performance at the Tonys on Sunday (which I mentioned here that I forgot to record), I finally hunted it down on YouTube and yeah, it lives up to the hype. But I'm far, far more tickled by this Patti Lupone homage clip. I don't know who the heck this Michael Burbach kid is, but he is made of the awesome. And the fabulous. Watch this clip and you will instantly became 100% gayer.

Oh, and use the gayest vodka you got

It's very cool to have brands and companies realize the importance of the LGBT market--there's a certain amount of "oh they see us" when a company (especially a big, important company) plasters up a billboard or new campaign specifically targeting the gay community. Of course if it's done in taste and of course if they are showing they either "get us" or are part of our community as well.

I haven't heard of a ton of Napa businesses going all out to reach the gay community (other than our recent big welcome for the Golden Bear tournament), but back in 2006 one winery , O'Brien Cellars, decided to donate portions of sales to support marriage equality.

I'm not sure where alcohol marketing fits in (alcoholism in the LGBT community isn't exactly helped by gay bars or bud light dollars, no matter how hot and sweaty or sexily thirsty the guys--or girls--on the billboards are), but Absolut definitely gets bonus points for cleverness.

From the Bilerico Project:
Liquor companies were some of the first to advertise with gay community, giving money to our publications and events when no one else would. Now we see just about every type of business focusing on our community, but that wasn't always the case.
Catch below a video interview with the (beadazzled and fabulous!) creator of the rainbow flag (I think how that works is that he promoted the idea of the rainbow for the LGBT community and not so much "invented" the actual rainbow):

Gays and mayonnaise: not what you might think

Just caught this from the LGTBlogosphere about a new Heinz advertisement (in England?) for mayo with a gay twist. (The commercial has the gay twist, not the mayonnaise. The mayonnaise has a deli twist: caramelized onions, sun dried tomato, roasted garlic and morroccan style flavors, BTW) It looks like a fun twist on gay (married?) life woven into a mayonnaise commercial. However, it might just also stir things up w/ the conservative mayonnaise lovers (OMG now my mayonnaise is gay?? Next thing you'll be telling me there's bestiality ketchup!). I think it might be controversial, but only because some less than open minded people don't want to see two dudes kissing when they're thinking about sandwiches and condiments.

Your take?

The Gay After: Daily Show's take on CA gay marriage and reactions

Video from the daily show is embedded here. If you can't see it, try the link: <a href="http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=173867">http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=173867</a>

I love Jon Stewart. Maybe he'll come to California and gay-marry me. ;) I hope this embedded video clip works. If not, lemme know and I can try posting the same clip from Hulu. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, no worries...just enjoy.)

Vindicated: 'gays' catching on

I have written about it before: my flippant use of the term 'gays' to describe any group of more than one person who identifies as homosexually oriented. Of course I had an explanation (don't I always) about why I do that (half jokingly and half on purpose and half just because), and now it seems that term is now also being used by major online publications.

Also of note, in spite of my attempt to not use the term so casually (or at least to use italics, when I do), I noticed in my search to the previous post that I use the term 'gays' all the time still. Sorry! Seriously, it is not to offend, it's mainly just a bad (no judgment here?) habit.

More photos from Napa's first same-sex marriage

Photos of today's momentous event from today's Napa Valley Register, also with a request in the comments section, "I encourage someone who is gay to write in. I'd love to hear their response to these posts. " ...and YES, the posts in the comments section are just as ridiculous, out-of-control and blazen as you'd think they'd be. They're also joyous, celebratory, congratulatory and sweet. Go figure.

Carol Whichard, right, holds up a piece of paper with the number one written on it, showing that her and partner Deb Stallings, left, would be the first same-sex couple in Napa County to be issued a marriage license. Five same-sex couples were issued licenses as soon as the County Clerk's office doors opened on Tuesday morning. J.L. Sousa/Register

Napa County Clerk John Tuteur, left, congratulates Deb Stallings, center, and her partner Carol Whichard of Napa. Stallings and Whichard were the first same sex couple in Napa County to receive a marriage license. The couple plan to marry in September. J.L. Sousa/Register

Not "gay" but we gotta scoop the Register

Okay, so this really has nothing to do with anything very much gay, but I don't imagine any of our local news outlets are going to jump on it, and I love beating the Napa Register on breaking news.

Click on Picture and drag (or click arrows on the street) View Larger Map

Google Maps (as far as I can tell) very recently launched Street View for the entire Napa Valley.

Have fun googlestalking your friends and/or potential gay love interests (there, see, I knew I could fit this into a compatible topic for the blog!).

And, in case you're freaked out or curious, here's Google's explanation of StreetView.

Use emotions for good, not evil!

This bit of horrible tugging at the emotions courtesy of the lovely folks at the Family Research Council, and appeared in newspapers over Father's Day weekend.

Out on the scene: pics from Napa's first same-sex marriages

Thanks to NapkinRick for pictures from this historic morning at Napa County's Clerk/Recorder's office. (I had a creamer incident that precluded me from attending personally)...

The one (yes, only one) protester. His sign reads "Wickedness has never been Happiness."

I guess the state spent all their time updating the applications/licenses and not on updating the rest of the materials!

Napa County Clerk John Tuteur poses with the five happy Napa couples (or should I say families?) that obtained marriage licenses when the office opened at 8:00 am this morning. Deb Stallings and Carol Whichard were the first couple. The five couples have been together a total of 99 years.

Again, CONGRATULATIONS to all of the families and couples that just got married (and all those who will)! Another note: aren't you glad that they got rid of the old, ugly clocktower? Can you imagine the hideous wedding photos if it was still there?

No hate truck sighted today in Napa

Thank God, this truck has not yet appeared around Napa and thank God that it and other "protesters" were way outnumbered by supporters all around the Bay Area at celebrations last night and today...

As spotted in San Francisco's Civic Center yesterday evening.

Crying over spilled non-dairy creamer

Spilled non-dairy sugar-free hazelnut creamer, actually....

I woke up late and was rushing to get ready to get down to the County Clerk's office to wish the first couple well when I dropped the quart-sized container of coffee-mate in the middle of my kitchen floor and, yes, it went all over. It took me a while to clean it up and by then it was way too close to 8am and so I gave up on trying to make it to Napa's first gay-wedding ceremony.

Congratulations and many best wishes to the happy couple!!

Click here for the Chronicle's coverage of the first couples around the Bay to be gay-married.

Any of our readers in attendance? We'd love more details...

Self-planning wedding planner

This morning I am imagining the Chronicle's staff waking up tired and hungover from the slew of same-sex weddings and celebrations they covered last night (or maybe I'm the only one that's a bit groggy). Well, somehow they got enough energy to keep on writing, and now that the "big rush" has (relatively) calmed down, they are talking about wedding planning for same-sex marriages--something that we gays haven't really had to(sorry...legally been allowed to) worry about yet (at least for our own weddings, right?). Our friend over at Bay Area Bites, Michael Procopio, had some amusing words on the "dilemma" of wedding planning for same-sex marriages (I don't think I've ever read the actual words on his blog, but I get the feeling Mr. Procopio is also family)...

What on earth does one feed a banquet hall full of homosexuals?...Have you ever baked a birthday cake for a gay man’s birthday party, only to find thirty or so other gay men moaning about carbohydrates, telling you that while the dessert you’ve just put your heart and soul into looks great, they’ll just have to pass on it, while patting their stomach? Well, I have, and what I have since learned is this: Guzzling vodka = good carbs, eating a tiny sliver of polenta cake= It-will-make-me-fat-and-then-no-one-will-love me-or-think-I’m-hot bad.

No, cake is out of the question. Perhaps a wedding protein shake would be more fitting. Of course, there’s the problem of slicing.

How does one approach a gay reception? For one couple I know, I imagine there would be a chilled Ketel One fountain splashing about. Would others prefer a Teddy Bear Picnic motif? I think the traditional menus might need a going over. Instead of fish or chicken, the invitations should request a preference for either no-carb or sauce on the side.

And what on earth do you feed a roomful of lesbians? There is only so much quinoa to be had in any given season, you know.

So any gay-wedding planning tips to pass on? Most romantic/gay-friendly spot in the Valley? Best gay-friendly caterer? Photographer? Wow, we better get our act together and start making recommendations.

Congrats, California!

...and congrats to all who come here to get married, too!

Isn't it awesome that these two sweet ladies were the first to get married in San Francisco? (And their cake was made by Elizabeth Faulkner of Citizen Cake fame. Yum! I'm considering a cupcake pyramid by the folks at Miette for my wedding pastry--although my man doesn't know it yet.) I hope that they become the poster-lesbians for the marriage equality movement, and people see that "gays" aren't the scary picture of the stereotype they have in their mind--although that's hot, too! Talk about a pefectly-gay and fabulous jump-start to the marriage equality celebrations!

...well, it's late (or early depending on how you look at it) I better get some rest so I can show up on time for Napa's first gay weddings...

Marriage equality celebration

Wow--I'm impressed it--seems like Napa is actually doing something progressive (I have yet to participate in the Drinking Liberally gatherings, but that's another promising gathering)! And it's not just the locals this time (which if you're in the right circles you can find doing cool stuff all the time), but Napa's Democrats are also hosting a celebration...

Just in via our mailbox:
1st Morning of Marriage-Equality Gathering
You are invited to join us in the morning to celebrate as the historic first license is issued! Carol Whichard and Deb Stallings are applying and hopefully lots of other loving and committed couples will too! We will gather at 7:30 AM in the plaza out front of First Squeeze and go to the Clerk’s office, located at 900 Coombs Street, Room 116. Please pass the word and invite your friends, gay and straight to help us show the community-wide support for this issue!

Engagement Party!
You are also invited to join the Democrats of Napa Valley as they host an “Engagement Party” to celebrate the end of marriage discrimination on Wednesday June 25, 2008 beginning at 7 PM at [Democrats of Napa Valley] Headquarters, located at 1015 Coombs Street, next to Sushi Mambo on Coombs Plaza. DONV invites all newly engaged or married couples as well as the community at-large to celebrate the long-overdue end to this discrimination.

Your turn: what should future topics be?

As we wait for the gay weddings to start up (and, like I said, I'll be at the County Clerk's office tomorrow morning to see if anyone is first in line for getting gay-married), I thought I'd put the question out there:

Of all the LGBT and Napa and Bay Area possibilities out there, what should we be writing about (or writing more about) on this blog?

My browser is a total flamer

Is it just a fun coincidence that Firefox releases version 3 of its browser on the same first, full day (June 17) that gays all over CA will be finally legal to get married? Or are the techies at Mozilla foundation so supportive that couldn't do anything but have this huge, anticipated release on equality Tuesday? Geesh, if the tech and gay communities celebrate together, that'll be one big, gay, nerdy celebration...

Get Firefox 3 here (your computer will love you for it, and you'll love me in return).

Download Day 2008

Did I just reveal how nerdy I am?

Same-sex marriage, around the Bay

From the SF Chronicle/Gate, with additions (from us)...

Same-sex wedding are being held around the state starting Monday evening in some counties. Here are local officials' plans [SFGate]:

Napa County: The County Clerk’s office will issue same-sex marriage licenses at the same time as hetero-sex licenses at their Napa Office--900 Coombs St Ste 116between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM Monday through Friday beginning Tuesday June 17, 2008. Appointments for ceremonies can be made by e-mailing the County Clerk at recorder-clerk@co.napa.ca.us, by calling 707.253.4247 or by coming in person to the office. Ceremonies are usually scheduled at 10 AM, 11 AM, 2 PM and 3 PM Monday through Friday. Couples needing other times can be accommodated. The cost of a license is $70 and we suggest that the couple purchase a certified copy for $13 at the time the license is issued. The certified copy will be mailed when the marriage certificate is received from the officiant. Ceremonies are $40 and the office can provide a witness if the couple needs one. Any questions or comments can be directed to John Tuteur by voice 707.253.4459 or by electronic mail at jtuteur@co.napa.ca.us

Alameda County: The county clerk's office will stay open late tonight - until 8 p.m. - and is one of a handful of offices statewide to wed couples today. On Tuesday, the office will maintain its regular hours, issuing marriage licenses from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $84 for the license and $50 for the ceremony. The clerk's office is located at 1106 Madison St. in downtown Oakland.

The license costs $75, and the ceremony costs $50. The clerk's office is located at 2300 County Center Drive in Santa Rosa.

San Francisco: Mayor Gavin Newsom will conduct just one marriage tonight for Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, the first same-sex couple to marry at City Hall in 2004. The clerk's office will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday and will stay open for ceremonies until 8 p.m. indefinitely. The office also will be open Saturday, June 28. Officials say they can issue up to 250 licenses and conduct 500 marriages each day; 128 couples had made appointments as of last week. The fee for a marriage license is $89, and a ceremony costs $67.

Contra Costa County: County Clerk-Recorder Steve Weir will marry his partner Tuesday morning as the county begins marrying same-sex couples at 8 a.m. Weir has deputized a handful of extra county workers to issue marriage certificates and oversee wedding ceremonies. Marriage licenses cost $85. Weir said Martinez police have notified his office, which is located at 555 Escobar St. in Martinez, that a small group of protesters will be on hand Tuesday.

Marin County: The county will begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples when the office opens at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The office will stay open past its usual 4 p.m. closing time to accommodate any couples who may still be waiting. Ceremonies cost $35, and marriage licenses cost $75. Macy's wants your same-sex registry

So I went a little cynical in the subject line, but really I was (really really) excited to hear that Macy's took out a full page ad in major papers in LA, NY and SF on Wednesday, May 28 to celebrate with us on marriage equality. Dunno if any of you saw it (I don't subscribe to the print version and the blogs are just talking about it now) but here ya go:

First comes love. Then comes marriage. And now it’s a milestone every couple in California can celebrate.

More about the ads from Evan Wolfson at the Huffington Post.

Now I just need to pick out wedding colors and bridesmaid dresses. Anyone heard of any local Napa businesses getting in on the same-sex wedding support (or economic) action?

Make change, not lawsuits

Here's that joint advisory I was telling you about yesterday.
Bottom Line. If you’re ready and it’s right for you, get married in California. If you do, claim the name and act like what you are--married. But don’t go suing right away. Most lawsuits will likely set us all back. There are other ways to fight which are more likely to win.

Anti-gay truck sighting in Napa, same-sex marriage updates

Should we mount a counter protest? Photo by fotogail

Anyone see the ridiculous truck with the huge billboards and bull horn condemning gay marriage and homosexuals? We've heard that it was driving around downtown Napa a few days ago... Glad I didn't see it, but I would've had a few words for it. Or at least I would have walked up to it and tried to order some tacos or ice cream in the most obvious voice and mannerisms possible. Just for fun, of course.

The Register wants to know...

So, I've posted a couple times on the Register's notorious comments section (here, and here). Usually they just post an article and then people can give their (helpful and/or reactionary) commentary. This time, they specifically posted only a prompt:

What is your view on California allowing same-sex marriages?

As of yet there are no comments. Warning: the comments section can get a little ridiculous.

(More) thoughts from Napa on same-sex marriage

Again, from the Napa Valley Register's (intriguingly beloved and hated) comments section:
  • Firewater wrote on Jun 8, 2008 7:39 AM:

" Good for Napa, it's about time this law went thru. I don't understand people trying to stop this arrangement since it doesn't effect them personally, maybe their moral beliefs.
but to the gay couples that have been together over decades they deserve this. THey should have benefits just like straight people do.
I know there will be alot of flack over this, but if any of you know gay people you would understand.
I am not gay but do have relatives and friends, This subject to me is like abortions. The government should not step in and control our bodies and our lives because of moral issues.

" FnH....how does treating all people equally make this downhill??? And what does equality have to do with the bible? According to the bible adulterers should be put to death, as should anyone who works on Sunday.

If you are personally against gay marriage, don't have one. "

" Once there was a time when women did not have rights, blacks did not have rights...this was injustice and intolerance. Equating homosexuality with bestiality? Grow up. Pedophilia? Certainly not.

Every woman and man should be equal in the eyes of the law. (period).
God? Keep that away from my state! Far from my state, close to my heart.

The hate and judgment is too much. Those who are against it...vote it out...it is your right to TRY to at least.

End of the American Family. FaithNHope:" Does the word Bible mean anything to any of you? Where are your morals? Man, this town is going downhill fast. This is so sad. These relationships are wrong people. Wrong. There are no two ways about it. "

My advice Hope?....check your history. Are you seriously still following that version The Romans perverted? Check your own morals...tsktsk for the judgment.

  • db76 wrote on Jun 8, 2008 6:37 PM:

" FaithNHope: I agree with you 100 percent. If you let gay people marry, than pretty soon Blacks will want to marry whites, Asians will marry Mexicans, and Jews will marry Christians. Society will fall apart!!! "

FaithnHope: You make me thankful that we live in a secular society. "

It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and...oh, wait.

Seriously, I have no idea what this is about. I've just heard that it's a European (obviously?) commercial for something and they ended up not airing it. Any guesses? It's semi-offensive and semi-funny. Either way, they got their biblical research slightly off. ;) Happy Tuesday.

NY Times interview possibility

The New York Times is interested in interviewing a same gender couple or couples who are planning to marry in Napa County (not necessarily at the Napa County office.) If any couples planning to get married in Napa County are interested please send John Tuteur, Napa County's Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk, a private e-mail jtuteur@co.napa.ca.us and he will facilitate the contact with the New York Times.

I also would hope you'd give us (we are THE source for Napa's gay news, right?) the heads up, too. C'mon, you know I've been begging to get invited, you could at the very least give us the scoop on the news. (I promise I won't invite myself)

Fine, then NOBODY can get married!

I was wondering what would happen if a local county clerk didn't agree with the same-sex marriage ruling, and the answer to that makes the bizarre news list for Bakersfield, CA:

[Kern County Auditor-Controller-County Clerk Ann Barnett] tried to resign her elected position as county clerk — while keeping her positions as auditor-controller and elections boss...And finally, when the ruling came down Wednesday that she had to license same-sex marriages, she decided to stop performing all weddings. That involved canceling 25 heterosexual ceremonies that had been scheduled after June 13, according to her staff. [Bakersfield Californian]

Looks like Bakersfield will not be a place for gay destination weddings...

Should we try and plan more?

So a respectable group of 9 of us met up at Cuvée on Friday night (even if I was 30 minutes late due to the LGBT Mass in Berkeley going later than I had expected--sorry guys and thanks SO much for waiting!). We enjoyed some cocktails (I needed one after my rush up from Berkeley) and then headed over to catch Sex and the City at the Cinedome. I had a great time meeting new (gay) folks in town and it made me start thinking...

Should we try and plan more gatherings this summer? Similar (cocktails, movie)? Something new (locals night at Oxbow)? Something crazy? Where/what would you want to meet other local gays and gay-friendly folk?

Hello, Mr. Obvious

A dilemma that even came up in conversation the other day--how to quickly tell who's gay and who's not--has been addressed by one of my new, favorite authors:
"All that product - along with the ear piercing, the supportive freedom rings, the religious devotion to "Project Runway" - now that these things no longer separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, we need new ways to identify one another. I propose, therefore, the following list of further possibilities. The heterosexuals will doubtless render them useless, one by one, but still I think these might last us for a while."
Click here for Joel Derfner's article from Pride Source, "Ways to be Gay".

Now I'm not so sure how much of a fan I am of these (personally, I've been supporting the less creative and more obvious rainbow wristband), but you gotta admit they have, at least a sort of, distinction. (As in, they distinctly stand out.) This goes along nicely with my belief that the more our friends, neighbors and ideological enemies get to know us for us, and the more we are visible in our day to day lives (and not so much Pride-float-in-a-thong, gyrating-and-thrusting to dance music) then the more we will be accepted and the less we will be judged based on stereotypes.

Derfner ends his top 10 list with "your pick": so what do you suggest we take up as a way to promote our visibility?

SFGate: Vegas is the gay destination

According to a front page article on SFGate this afternoon, Vegas ranks ahead of San Fransico as the number two gay travel destination (just under New York City)...
They shouldn't have been surprised. The Rat Pack ethos, with its thinly veiled - or sometimes blatant - homophobia has long been relegated to nostalgia. There's a gay nightclub on the Strip, and plenty of others scattered around the city. Mayor Oscar Goodman, a former mob lawyer, marches in the annual gay pride parade...

...
"Vegas is big and glitzy and exciting," said David Paisley, the firm's senior projects director, "and gays and lesbians are drawn to that."...

"For a long time, Las Vegas has been perceived to be an inclusive destination," said Terry Jicinsky, a gay man who is the convention authority's senior vice president of marketing. And, unlike some destinations, it doesn't need to remake its image for this audience. Gays and lesbians are attracted to Vegas for exactly the same reasons everyone else is. The agency, said Jicinsky is "not attempting to position Las Vegas as a destination for a 'gay experience,' such as Key West or Palm Springs might try to do."
Sounds fun to me! My partner has been talking up Vegas for a while now. Knowing that there are not only gay-friendly staff and destinations around the city, but also a gay-exclusive resort and other clubs makes it sound worthwhile instead of having to watch out for the urge to hold hands or sneak a kiss.

I've written before about Napa's gay paradox--having great gay destination worthy things such as decadent food and wine and amazing scenery and spas, yet a fairly invisible gay scene. Do you consider Napa to be a gay destination? Why? What would it take to bump up Napa's gay friendly status?

Earlybird SF weddings get the OK

Quick news from the net:

SF gets permission from the State to begin same-sex marriages the same day the ruling goes into effect (one day earlier than the rest of the state will begin the weddings), at 5:0o pm on June 16. Your Napa fairytale gay wedding will still have to wait until the next morning. :)

My first gay-cott: don't buy Bolthouse Juice

Apparently Bolthouse Juice is pretty popular among our people (italics added especially for you, John) so hopefully the company and people behind the company will feel the effect of the gay community closing their wallets and not buying their delicious juices (no matter how refreshing their latest blend of freshly pressed pomegranate and acaí might look).

The carrot farmer behind the juices just donated $100,000 to support the campaign to end same-sex marriage in California. Enough said?

From the news:
The National Organization for Marriage California donated $700,000 to the campaign. One of the organization’s largest financial contributors includes Bolthouse, who declined to comment about his donation Tuesday. The measure’s proponents said the campaign to promote the initiative may exceed $30 million. Supporters have spent about $1.8 million to collect signatures and publicize the initiative, according to campaign filings. Other supporters include San Diego developer Terry Caster ($172,000); hotel developer Manchester Financial Group of San Diego ($125,000); Fieldstead and Co. of Irvine ($400,000) and Knights of Columbus Headquarters in Connecticut ($250,000).
