A queer turn of world events

Recent gay news, from the internets:
  • More than 600 people (3x the number expected) marched in Mumbai, India's first gay pride parade. Sure it a lot of the usual queer fun and celebration, but mainly marchers were protesting for the repeal of145+ year-old laws that criminalize gay intimacy. (In India they are known as "Section 377" of the Penal Code.) Homosexuality is illegal in India, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. [365Gay]

  • The British government's domestic spy agency, MI5 is recruiting gay spies. This has been seen as "a move that reflects dramatic changes in the attitudes of the British establishment over the past decade" [FT] It is also dramatically different "from the height of the Cold War, when Britain’s spy agencies conducted a purge of suspected gays following the Burgess affair." • The American Psychological Association has come out in favor of trans civil rights, including:
    * support legal and social recognition of transgender individuals consistent with their gender identity and expression
    * support the provision of adequate and medically necessary treatment for transgender and gender-variant people
    * recognize the benefit and necessity of gender transition treatments for appropriately evaluated individuals
*call on public and private insurers to cover these treatments. [Pam'sHB]

  1. Wow that's a great turnout. This must be a huge step forward for India to publicly knowledge the presence of the gay community.
